This is what Rogier says about this project: ‘Earth’s Dylan Carlson teams up with improv drummer/collaborator Rogier Smal for this brilliant full length LP. After releasing the Dylan Carlson/Rogier Smal Split 7″ vinyl, Toztizok Zoundz released this full length release of Carlson and Smal playing as a duo. Five tracks of Carlson’s legendary guitar work and Smal’s free drumming. Recorded in Manchester on their previous duo tour in October 2013. All recorded in one take, this record is like being right there and listening to these two friends playing urgent music straight from the soul. Personal music for sure! The artwork is a collaboration by painter Helena Sanders (who also did the great artwork for the Carlson/Smal 7″) and Simon Fowler who did the artwork for a list of bands that is far too long to mention but contains projects like Boris, Earth, Stephen O’Malley, Cafe Oto etc.’
All kids should play is just a name. It represents a few people and organisations who try to send a container with musical equipment to Tanzania and then later in the year invite a few musicians to come and host a few workshops with children and mentally handicapped people. It will take place in a little village called Mambo, Lushoto in the Usambara mountains. There is already an organisation who have been there permanently for 6 years called MamboViewPoint. They built a lodge and with that basis they do all kinds of development projects in the field of education, healthcare, water, roads and bridges, farming and much more. One of the early guests of the lodge was Gijs, a dutch guy who fell in love with the area and the views that are one of a kind. Within two days he committed to start a circus activity with children of the village (1500 out of the 5000 villagers are primary school kids). Almost 5 years later this project has become pretty successful, does performances in the lodge, the village and this january went on tour for the first time and did 7 shows in 3 days (and the kids got to see the sea for the first time in their lives). As it became so successful the idea was to extend the program with other arty forms and music was the first obvious thing that came to mind. Gijs runs a music equipment company in Holland called Smoeff and rents gear to mostly North American and Australian bands that come and tour Europe. Every year about 200 bands are playing equipment supplied by Smoeff. Already for a few years Smoeff is donating about 4000-5000 for various projects in Mambo. To finance sending a container full of equipment to Tanzania we ask a lot of the bands that Smoeff works with to donate 5 records and sign them. Then we sell them on eBay.de one by one. All the proceeds minus eBay/PayPal expenses goes in the fund. We think we need about 5000 euro. The musicians who come and do the project at the end of the year will not be paid out of this fund. They will finance their own flights, transportation, food and lodging….
Apart from Earth we also have signed records from Swans, Earth, The War On Drugs on sale right now. Soon to come Enablers, Patrick Watson, The New Pornographers, Screaming Females and Wire special package.
soon to be on cassette tape….. Mountain Dew = ∆D∆E∆W∆ — — Black Rainbow
New CINEMA SOLORIENS/Cult of St. Margaret available today on iTunes!
(pssst, just buy it from the CS website though)
“I am very proud to present the latest offering from CINEMA SOLORIENS!”
Cult of Saint Margaret, recorded in Manchester, with the core trio of James Harrar, tenor sax, Akai EVI, electric bulbul tarang, electronics & percussion, Marshall Allen (Sun Ra Arkestra), alto sax, Crumar EVI, Casiotone & effects and Rogier Smal, drums & percussion. Also featuring: Graham Massey (808 State), guitar & modified bass clarinet, Paddy Steer, bass & electronics, David Birchall, percussion and Richard Harrison (Spaceheads), percussion.
I find it to be a completely different exploration from previous CS works, more ambient in nature and a very interesting listen. Marshall likes to say, “it sounds like chamber music from the future.”
It is available for sale at the Cinema Soloriens webstore, CD Baby (it has audio samples) and soon on iTunes.
